CAE has launched its much anticipated web-based training system, Simfinity, which will deliver flight and maintenance training over the internet.

The system will allow users to access high-fidelity simulations via the internet using standard desktop or laptop PCs. Users will be able to "access the power of a full-flight simulator at home or on the road, in a self-paced environment", says vice-president, interactive learning services, Kamilia Sofia.

Beginning this month, selected customers will be invited to test the web-based system. CAE says American Airlines, Continental Express and Swissair will be the first to run trial courses. The Simfinity launch heralds a shift in aviation training towards distance learning.

Meanwhile, FlightSafety Boeing Training International (FSB) has teamed with Aerosim Technologies to develop a flight management systems (FMS) training programme that will deliver "intelligent tutoring" remotely.

The results of a proof of concept study conducted using laptop computers and lessons developed for Boeing 747-400 pilots undergoing transition training were "overwhelmingly conclusive that intelligent tutoring of FMS skills can be performed on locally delivered devices", says FSB.

FlightSafety Boeing has received Level D approval for the second Boeing 737-700/800 simulator to be installed in its Atlanta, Georgia, training centre. A 717 simulator will be installed in July. All three devices have been built by FlightSafety International.
