CAE ELECTRONICS has been awarded a C$48 million ($35 million) contract to supply two Mikoyan MiG-29 simulators to Malaysia. The contract, placed by Malaysian prime contractor Sapura Holdings, is for one operational flight-trainer and one full-mission simulator for the Malaysian air force's MiG-29M fighters.

Each trainer will have CAE's MaxVue visual system, and the full-mission simulator will have the company's helmet-mounted display system in place of the traditional dome. CAE will also develop a tactical-environment simulation for the full-mission device.

Malaysia was offered Russian simulators originally, but the air force made the 18-aircraft order contingent on the supply of Western-standard training equipment. CAE has a relationship with Russian simulator producer ERA/Penza, and rebuilt a former East German MiG-29 simulator for the German air force following re-unification in 1990.

CAE-Invertron has won a UK Ministry of Defence contract to supply a computer-based recognition trainer. The system, with 250 workstations, will generate dynamic target images in visual and thermal wavebands.
