Korean Air (KAL) and Taiwan's China Airlines (CAL) have launched a codeshare partnership covering flights between their respective bases.

CAL says in a statement that the codeshare co-operation applies to each airline's nine weekly flights between Taipei and Seoul, "giving [passengers] 18 choices each week and making travel between Taipei and Seoul much more convenient".

The airlines are also co-operating on transfer services beyond Seoul to seven points in China, says CAL, which is barred from flying to China as the Chinese government considers Taiwan a renegade province.

CAL says its passengers can now transfer to flights operated by SkyTeam alliance carrier KAL between Seoul and the Chinese cities of Beijing, Jinan, Qingdao, Shanghai, Shenyang, Tianjin and Wuhan.

"This will provide passengers another option for travelling to northern China," says CAL.

Airlines from South Korea and Taiwan were barred from serving the other side until 2002 when, after years of political tensions, a deal was reached allowing for charter flights.
