China Airlines (CAL) has been ordered by Taiwan's transport ministry not to order any new aircraft until it has improved its operations and safety standards. This move is the Taiwan Government's latest to force the carrier to upgrade its safety standards. CAL has suffered two major widebody accidents since April 1994, the most recent being the 16 February loss of an Airbus A300-600R and 196 lives at Taipei. Existing orders are not affected, so the carrier is still in line to take delivery of 10 Boeing 737-800s, three Boeing 747-400s and two Airbus A300-600Rs over the next few years.
