Both Airbus and Boeing have dipped into negative net orders for the year to date, having suffered more cancellations than secured sales.
Airbus' newly-released January order book shows the airframer gained orders for four A321s from Turkish Airlines.
But it also posted cancellations for 12 aircraft - three A318s and A320s, two A319s and four A321s - giving it a net deficit of eight jets for the month.
Its figures have yet to include the additional pair of A380s for Korean Air.
Airbus has already forecast that the total number of aircraft it delivers this year will be in excess of the number ordered. It delivered 34 in January.
Rival Boeing landed orders for 18 aircraft, all 737s, from Southwest Airlines and Ryanair.
But the US manufacturer has recorded the loss of 31 787s through the cancellation of orders from S7 Airlines and lessor LCAL, resulting in a net deficit of 13 aircraft by 3 February.
