A new study into the possible effects of cosmic radiation on airline pilots has revealed a higher-than-usual incidence of skin cancer among Icelandic pilots but is unable to identify its cause.

One of several separate studies into the subject carried out by Nordic countries, the Icelandic study records a "high rate" of malignant melanoma - a type of skin cancer - in Icelandic pilots, with the highest incidence among those flying routes crossing five different time zones.

However while cosmic radiation remains a possible cause, malignant melanoma is also commonly associated with excessive sunbathing.
