Cape Canaveral's US Air Force Pad 41 will be destroyed on 12 September to begin its transformation into the new commercial Lockheed Martin Atlas V launch pad.

Pad 41 began service with a Titan 3C launch in December 1965. During more than 30 years of service, it dispatched Titan 3Es with Viking and Voyager probes, and numerous spy satellites on other Titan models.

The Atlas V launcher will be assembled in a vertical integration building 600m (1,970ft) from the new pad, and rolled out for launch 24h before lift-off. The neighbouring Pad 40 will continue in service to support Titan 4 launches.
