By adding just 1.5kg of carbon to each aircraft brake, Messier-Bugatti has managed to achieve a 50% increase in the number of cycles between overhauls.

The company's latest carbon brake, Sepcarb III PLUS, reduces airline operating costs and it's been ordered by a variety of airlines operating the Airbus A319/A320 family of twinjets, including Air Tours, All Nippon Airways, Ansett, Royal Brunei and Sabena.

The number of landings per overhaul (LPO) goes up from an average of 1,650 when using the standard brake, to around 2,500 cycles for the new specification.

The latest brakes are due for full certification in November this year and will be basic equipment on the Airbus A319 and A320 by mid-1999.
