Textron Systems is building a carbon rapid densification plant to scale-up production of carbon/carbon composite products using the company's patented RD process.

Announcing the news at Farnborough, Textron Systems says the new plant, located in Massachusetts and scheduled to be fully operational by early 1997, will give the company the capability and capacity to manufacture carbon aircraft brakes and automotive friction products in volume.

The RD process enables the densification of carbon/carbon products to be completed in a fraction of the time taken by conventional densification methods. Textron Systems' RD process reduces this time from months to hours.
