Passenger traffic growth may have slowed for Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) members over the past six months but the group is hopeful more encouraging signs from the cargo market mean global economic conditions remain healthy.
AAPA director general Andrew Herdman says the cargo market remains healthy and this should be seen as a positive sign. "To the degree that cargo is a leading indicator, that gives us some optimism," he say
Passenger traffic has been growing at slower rates for AAPA members compared with the Asia-Pacific as a whole, largely because the group does not have members from fast-growing China and India. After a slowdown towards the end of 2005, AAPA member traffic "staged a modest recovery in 2006".
"In the past six months we have seen a slowdown in the growth rates. Having said that, we are still setting new records," Herdman says.
