CargoLifter, based at Brand airfield near Berlin in Germany, plans to begin construction next year of a huge airship freighter dubbed the CL160. The airship, which will be 242m long and have a diameter of 61m, will be able to carry its payload of 160t over distances of 10,000km, and cruise at of 44-60kt (80-115km/h ) at 6,000ft (1,830m). The airship which could enter service in 2001, is pitched as an alternative to sea/road transport for the movement of large loads.
