Cathay Pacific has temporarily suspended  services to Sri Lanka's Colombo airport following the bombing of an adjacent military airbase by Tamil Tiger separatists at 1245 Monday morning.

The Sri Lankan ministry of defence condemned the attack on Katunayake Air Force Camp, which killed three air force personnel and injured 16.

The Tamil Tigers have no official air force but are understood to have used a light aircraft to drop three bombs on the base, one of which failed to explode.

Colombo airport was closed for two hours, causing delays to some flights. Cathay Pacific said safety was its “top priority” and that flights would resume only after a “careful assessment” of the situation.

In July 2001 Tamil Tiger militants completely destroyed three of SriLankan Airlines’ aircraft and damaged three others.
