In what it describes as a small but significant step, Cathay Pacific Airways is preparing to begin a three-times-weekly service between Hong Kong and Beijing before year-end after securing an operating permit from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). Cathay's entry on to this route, and others to Chinese cities, was unsuccessfully opposed by Hong Kong-based Dragonair. Other carriers on the Hong Kong-Beijing route in addition to Dragonair are Air China and China Southern Airlines.
