Cathay Pacific Airways has announced plans to hire 1,550 staff this year and return to the Hong Kong-Shanghai cargo route after a 15-year absence.

Cathay says its will raise staff levels by about 10%, with an extra 1,200 cabin crew, 150 pilots and 200 ground staff. Nine new aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2005 and fresh routes are scheduled, including an inaugural flight to Moscow.

New Cathay Pacific chief executive Philip Chen Nan-lok says Shanghai cargo flights will be launched this month, barring any regulatory hurdles.
