Developmental flight tests of Cessna's Citation Encore light business jet have revealed the need for alterations to the twin-engined aircraft. These will delay certification and first deliveries until the second and fourth quarters of next year.

Wichita, Kansas-based Cessna will add 36cm (14in) wing tip extensions to shorten take-off distances, increase climb performance and cruise speeds at normal operating altitudes. Cessna engineers have also designed new main-gear fairings that are expected to significantly reduce cabin noise and drag.

If the changes to the $6.9 million Citation Ultra replacement are successful, the Encore's still-air range should also increase above flight test levels. The alterations will, however, delay the development schedule of the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW535A-powered aircraft by up to six months. Cessna says: "The downside of avoiding the changes was less palatable - delivering a business jet with performance less than its potential."
