When does a PC-based flight simulator stop being a toy and become a professional tool?

That's a grey area, but take a look at one of the latest offerings at the Datel Defence stand and make up your own mind.

Datel is demonstrating a Rafale simulator running on a standard PC.

Developed by Simigon of Israel, the simulator reaches new levels of computer graphics quality, giving very accurate views of the landscape and a comprehensive instrument display.

The flight characteristics are reputed to mirror the Rafale. But could you learn to fly with it?

According to Datel's Neil Ritchie it's a very cost-effective way of doing ground-based training and is especially useful for mission rehearsals.

Simigon also produces simulation software for other aircraft, including the Boeing 747 and helicopters.
