Chelton, the avionics division of UK engineering group Cobham, has paid £3 million ($5.5 million) for Precision Antennas, adding it to an antennas group which includes eight other companies. Chelton, the largest, fastest-growing and most profitable part of the group, responsible for 38% of the group's turnover, saw its prospects improve last year with the award of the contract for the antenna of the US military's Joint Tactical Radio System, as well as several contracts for military antennas as a result of the Iraq war. Adding Precision Antennas will allow it to compete better in the civilian telecommunications market, Cobham says.
