Chile's air force has disclosed an allocation of $10 million to modernise its fleet of Lockheed Martin C-130 tactical transports.

The three aircraft - two Hs and an older B model - will be equipped with multifunction displays in lieu of their conventional flight instruments, with the work expected to be carried out by Chile's Enaer.

Long deferred, the decision was accelerated in the wake of Chile's February earthquake, when the air force's C-130s were instrumental in providing rapid disaster relief.

Usually detached in southern Chile, the transports are also key components in supporting the country's burgeoning Antarctic commitments.
