China and rival Taiwan are closing on a deal to allow non-stop flights between the two sides over the Chinese New Year holiday period early next year, writes Nicholas Ionides.

China recently issued a public invitation for the Taipei Airlines Association to enter into talks to allow flights by airlines from both sides over the holiday period, which falls at the end of January.

Taiwan has responded favourably to China’s invitation and formal discussions are expected to begin soon. Informal talks have already been taking place.

If an agreement is reached, the new flights will also be aimed at Taiwanese business users living in China.
