Asia Satellite Telecommunications of Hong Kong has selected a China Great Wall Industry Long March 3B booster for the launch of its latest Asiasat communications satellite in 1999. The launch will follow that of the Asisat 3S, which is flying on a Russian Proton, also in 1999.

China plans to launch five other satellites in 1999, including the Fengyun 4 meteorological satellite, on the first uprated Long March 4B. One Long March 2C/SD flight carrying two Iridium spacecraft is also planned, plus launches of a science and technology satellite, Shijian 5, and the Ziyuan 1, a joint Chinese-Pakistani craft.
