According to China's state media, the investigation into the 7 May crash of a China Northern Airlines Boeing MD-82 has revealed it was caused by a lone saboteur who had taken out seven life insurance policies. Zhang Pilin is thought to have started a fire in the passenger cabin on a flight from Beijing. The fire caused the pilots to lose control of the aircraft, which plunged into the sea killing all 112 people on board. The government has confirmed Zhang's beneficiaries stood to receive about $120,000.
