China and the USA were poised to sign a new air services agreement, doubling flights between the two countries, as Flight International closed for press. The deal will see the 27 weekly flights available to each country rise to 54 by April 2001, when both will also add a fourth carrier. Northwest Airlines, United Airlines and FedEx already operate to China, while American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, UPS and Polar Air Cargo have applied for flights. Air China, China Eastern and China Southern fly to the USA. The new agreement will see the number of Chinese cities served rise from three to five, and those in the USA from 10 to 12.
