A Boeing 767-300ER bought by the Chinese air force to transport President Jiang Zemin and other VIPs was bugged with over 20 sophisticated listening devices, including some embedded in ashtray wells, according to Beijing. The interior of the aircraft was completed last year by US companies including Gore design, of San Antonio, Texas, under heavy Chinese security (Flight International, 2-9 October 2001). The devices eluded detection until the aircraft arrived in Beijing.
