Although an oil company, or its seismic contractor, would be wise to choose a reputable helicopter operator with a known track record for safety, this is not always possible when Latin American governments apply pressure to use the local companies, or even the military forces. Using the military can ensure a reliable source of spares, or even a spare aircraft, and pilots and mechanics generally know the local area well. In return, the military enjoys the extra income and the increased flying.

There can be problems, however, with the provision of adequate insurance cover and with pilots not having the necessary levels of experience demanded by the oil companies. In addition, military authorities often refuse to allow inspection of their documents and equipment for the purpose of safety audits. When audits are allowed, they may refuse to carry out any recommendations.
