Cirrus to fit French diesel engine in SR22 variant

Cirrus Design is to work on a version of its SR22 light aircraft, powered by a French SMA diesel engine. Deliveries of the aircraft to European customers are expected to begin next year.

The new derivative, dubbed the SR21tdi, will be powered by a 170kW (230hp) SMA SR-305 turbocharged diesel. The aircraft is expected to offer SR22-like performance at higher altitudes with significantly lower fuel consumption, says Cirrus.

The SR22 is equipped with a more powerful version of the company's SR20 - the 230kW Teledyne Continental IO-550-N.

The new model is being developed initially exclusively for the European market. The SR-305 has been flight-tested in a Cessna 182 and an EADS Socata, says the French engine maker.
