Formerly classified mid-1970s to early 1980s satellite images of Antarctica have been released to help scientists gauge the effects of the depleted ozone layer. Seven images of the Dry Valleys area, shrouded in darkness for much of the year, were released. The area consists of ice-covered lakes, ephemeral streams and exposed soil.
