CMC Electronics is progressing well with its Lockheed Martin CP-140 Aurora Navigation and Flight Instruments Modernisation Project for Canada's Department of National Defence (DND).

The prototype CP-140 - the Canadian version of the P-3 Orion - fitted with the new CMC Electronics avionics suite successfully completed its first test flight two months ago.

CMC (Hall 4, C19A) and installers DND have now completed more than 50 flight hours aboard the aircraft, which is now cleared for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) flight using the navigation and flight instruments. This flight test phase is expected to be completed by autumn 2004.

Modernisation

General Ray Henault, chief of the defence staff, says: "This flight is the first major step towards the modernisation of Canada's fleet of Aurora aircraft. The updated aircraft will enhance the ability of our pilots and aircrews to protect and safeguard our coastlines." Bob Atac, CMC's vice-president, military aviation, adds: "The CP-140 upgrade programme provides a proven baseline for a cockpit upgrade solution. As a result of developing, integrating, testing and installing the system, CMC has the tools and knowledge needed to offer a complete solution to other P-3 users."

The upgrade project is valued at C$75 million ($57 million) and as prime contractor, CMC Electronics has total responsibility for the turnkey project.
