CMC Electronics (Stand B19, Hall 5) has signed a multi-year agreement to supply its latest-generation Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers to Honeywell (Stand B11, Hall 5).

Under the terms of the agreement, the receivers will be integrated into Honeywell's Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) as the GPS reference receiver, and in several of Honeywell's aircraft navigation and landing products. The agreement has a potential sales value in excess of C$50 million ($33 million).

The new CMC Electronics GPS receiver, known as the CMA-4024, is a 24-channel aviation-grade receiver with a growth path to full Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) Category I and LAAS Category IIIb approach capability.

Effort

The CMA-4024 has been developed as a collaborative effort with NovAtel, CMC Electronics' subsidiary, and combines the respective technological strengths of both companies to develop the most advanced GPS receiver to meet the most demanding needs of civil aviation. Both LAAS and WAAS enhance the accuracy of GPS by comparing a fixed station's known position with its GPS-indicated position. Any difference is then used to compute and transmit a correction signal.

Approach

LAAS provides more accurate signals over a local area, such as an airport approach, while WAAS uses several reference stations to provide a correction over a wide regional area.

Jim Close, president and chief executive of CMC Electronics, says: "To date, we have supplied Honeywell with more than 5,000 GPS receivers and several thousand specialised component assemblies, including control display unit panels."
