PROGRAMME FOR HARMONISED AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT RESEARCH IN EURO-CONTROL (PHARE)

Aimed at demonstrating the feasibility and merits of a future air-to-ground integrated air-traffic-management system in all phases of flight. Now part of Euro-control's European Air Traffic Management System initiative. The last of three demonstrations in 1998 will include multi-sector planning, human-centred automation and en route terminal-manoeuvring-area interfacing. Includes a trial of four- dimensional experimental flight-management.

NORTH EUROPEAN ADS-B NET-WORK (NEAN) AND FUSION OF ADS-B AND RADAR DATA(FARAWAY)

Funded by the European Commission. Demonstration of the benefits of ADS-B, validation of technology and establishment of a cost base. Identification of institutional and certification problems. The NEAN cellular network covers much of northern Europe, and includes studies of situational awareness, free flight, fleet management, surveillance, global satellite-system augmentation and ground-movement monitoring.

JOINT AIR NAVIGATION EXPERIMENTS (JANE)

Run by the German DFS and Deutsche Lufthansa, to form the basis of an assessment of potential impact of free flight in German airspace. Evaluation and demonstration of future CNS technologies, mainly using existing ground and airborne equipment and network infrastructure. Advanced conflict resolution.

SWEDISH MAN-MACHINE INTERFACE (MMI) STUDY

Based around the NEAN programme, demonstrating advanced use of ADS-B. Trials have been carried out with two MMI-equipped Fokker F28s, leading to the installation of ADS-B in SAS and Lufthansa commercial aircraft and ground vehicles, in 1997.

EUROPEAN ATC HARMONISATION AND INTEGRATION PROGRAMME (EATCHIP)

Gradual integration of European air-traffic-control (ATC) leading in 2005 to the introduction o the CNS/ATM-based European Air Traffic Management System.
