A British Aerospace 146 aircraft operated by Cobham Aviation Services had to make an emergency landing in Perth after the aircraft’s No. 2 Honeywell ALF 502 engine caught fire.
“The aircraft was climbing after take-off when the fire occurred in engine No. 2, which is on the port side of the aircraft,” says a company spokesman. “When the fire was detected, the engine was shut down and the fire extinguished.”
The aircraft, which was operating a fly-in, fly-out charter service to Barrow Island, landed safely, and all 92 passengers and five crew disembarked.
As a precaution, firefighters met the aircraft upon landing. Cobham adds that the incident is being investigated.
Flight tracking web sites indicate that the aircraft bears registration VH-NJI and was operating flight NC1994.
Flightglobal’s Ascend Online Fleets database indicates that following its delivery in October 1995, VH-NJI spent ten years with Turkish Airlines, and just over a year with Riau Airlines from September 2008 to April 2010. In August 2010 the aircraft entered service with National Jet Express – the air operators certificate under which Cobham Aviation Services operates in Australia.
The owner of the aircraft is Trident Jet in Dublin, Ireland.
