The UK's Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO), part of the country's Ministry of Defence, has awarded a $131-million contract to BAE Systems to upgrade the cockpit systems of the UK Royal Air Force's fleet of 142 Panavia Tornado GR4 strike aircraft.

The Tornado Advanced Radar Display and Information System (Tardis) will replace 1970s-technology wet film and display processing technologies with a new cockpit display system integrated with a new radar and map processor.

Prime contractor and design authority BAE Systems Customer Solutions and Support will start fitting Tardis in July 2004, to meet an in-service date of August 2006. Tardis will be fitted at RAF stations during routine maintenance to minimise cost and downtime for the GR4 fleet.
