ROCKWELL'S COLLINS Air Transport division is to offer airlines a High Frequency Data Link (HFDL) upgrade kit, designed for installation on Collins HFS-700, HFS-900, 628T-2 and 628T-2A HF (high-frequency) voice communication systems.

The upgrade will allow existing radios to be modernised by replacing analogue circuitry with digital technology optimised for data communications.

Incorporation of the digital upgrade into existing HF radios removes the need for the additional rack space, power and wiring required by external HF data units.

The upgrade makes existing HF radios "compliant with ARINC 753 and 635", which enables operators to "...fully realise the business and operational benefits of the evolving communication-navigation-surveillance/air traffic management environment without having to incur the expense of replacing their existing HF equipment", says programme manager Joe Finkstein.

The upgrade kit will be available in December 1996.
