Surveillance

US Congress has been notified of the long-planned sale of two long-range early warning radars to Taiwan for $1.8 billion. The sale was approved in principle by the US government in 1999, but is vehemently opposed by China. The UHF radars will detect and track ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft. Raytheon is offering its FPS-115 Pave Paws phased-array radar, and Lockheed Martin is expected to bid. The sale, which Congress must approve, includes four missile warning centres.
