As part of a target to save a further $500 million annually, Continental Airlines has announced the retirement of four executive vice-presidents (EVP). With these retirements, and that of chief operating officer CD McLean, the carrier has trimmed its senior management by 25%.

The four EVP retirements, which are already effective, are: George Mason, technical operations; Bonnie Reitz, sales and distribution; Barry Simon, international; and Kuniaki Tsuruta, purchasing and material services.

Following these moves, president Larry Kellner has been elected chief operating officer. In other changes, Jeff Smisek, previously EVP corporate/secretary, has assumed additional responsibilities relating to corporate development and alliances. He continues to report to chief executive Gordon Bethune. Jeff Misner, chief financial officer, who previously reported to Kellner, now reports to Bethune.

In the sales and marketing area, Jim Compton, formerly senior vice-president pricing and revenue management, has been named senior vice-president marketing, where he will oversee the company's domestic and international sales, marketing and distribution. Glen Hauenstein, senior vice-president scheduling, moves over to network.
