Continental Airlines cites the slowing US and Colombian economies in its request for permission to postpone starting service between Newark and Cali. The carrier holds rights to a seven-times-a-week frequency on the route and service was due to begin on 1 October. But now Continental has now asked the US Transportation Department to waive its 90-day dormancy rule so that service launch can be delayed to next June. In a 6 June filing with the department, Continental says "the additional eight months is a reasonable period of time in which to expect a turnaround in Colombia's economic conditions and an upswing in the US economy."
