Continental Airlines is doubling first class seating on its fleet of Boeing 757-300 aircraft. The retrofit will give the aircraft 24 first-class seats and reduce current coach seating from 210 to 192 units. Continental's entire 757-300 seating is manufactured by Koito Industries of Yokohama, Japan. First-class seats are 20.75in (53cm) wide and are configured with a 38in pitch.

The airline could not immediately confirm who is contracted to retrofit the fleet. The first reconfigured aircraft is scheduled to be completed in the summer. The project will be completed by early 2006, says the airline.

Continental currently operates nine 757-300s, and has an agreement with Boeing to lease eight more of the type. Deliveries start in July.

"We are seeing a significant increase in demand for our first class product, a result of our competitive fares as well as our complimentary upgrade programme for [frequent flyer program] members," says Continental chairman and chief executive Larry Kellner.
