An Air Freight New Zealand Convair 580 freighter en route from Christchurch to Palmerston North, New Zealand, crashed at about 21:30 local time on 3 October. The twin-turboprop (ZK-KFU), which had begun its descent, hit the sea about 8km north of Paraparaumu and both pilots are listed as missing, says Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) chief inspector John Mockett. The TAIC describes conditions as "a dark night, north west winds about 20kt (37km/h) at the surface, and rain, heavy at times". There was no emergency call.
