Sir - I read the article "Fast data" (Flight International, 25 September-1 October, P2) with interest, as I managed the introduction of quick-access recorders (QARs) into Qantas.

A key issue, not entirely addressed in the article, is the cost of data transmission from aircraft. This is particularly expensive when satellites are used, although QARs can be a major cost-saver in storing aircraft data cheaply.

Airline departments must be rigorous in deciding whether they need data in real time. Engineering requirements are particularly important, as they use most of the data. A good test of real-time requirements is whether the data is read at the weekend!
