The German air force has taken delivery of the first of three Eurocopter AS532U2 Cougars which will now be used for VIP transport duties. The helicopters are replacing three Mil Mi-8s which are being retired from service. The first helicopter to be delivered is now based in Berlin, while the remaining two are being used for pilot training at Eurocopter's plant in Marignane, France. The air force had hoped to order additional Cougars to replace four ageing Bell UH-1Ds still serving in the VIP transport role. This order has had to be delayed indefinitely.
