Water jet cutting in the aerospace industry has been pioneered in the UK by Bulwell Precision Engineers. The firm (H4/B2) supplies precision components cut by water to aerospace industry and is principle supplier to Rolls-Royce, Volvo Aerospace and MTU.
Water pumped at 3,800bar (55,000psi) from a carbide nozzle can cut through anything from plastic to steels and harder materials when garnet is introduced. The benefits of water jet cutting include the need for less materials as there is less waste and less finishing required as the finish is fairly smooth.
