THE CZECH air force has selected Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) to upgrade 30 of its MIG-21MFs. The $100 million contract could be signed in 1996 if the Czechs decide to go ahead.

The upgrade plan faces stiff opposition from various quarters - not least the Czech parliament - with the purchase of Lockheed Martin F-16s, or other Western fighters such as the Saab JAS39 being the preferred option.

IAI, along with local partners, Letecke Opravny Kbely and engine over-hauler LOM Prague, was selected in early December by a special committee of the Czech air force and parliament, which evaluated the proposals.

The winning package, includes an Elta 2032 multi-mode radar, an advanced navigation system and carriage for advanced weapon systems.

Under the proposal, the upgrade of the 24 single-seat and six two-seat MIG-21s would be performed at the LOK factory, near Prague.
