The Czech Republic is looking to acquire military hardware from Russia in exchange for writing off a $1.1 billion debt dating from the Cold War. Czech defence minister Jaroslav Tvrdik says the cancellation would pay for two Antonov An-70 transports.

The Czech air force is also negotiating for a further six Mil Mi-35 Hind attack helicopters. The deal may also includeMi-24/35 technical documentation, which would strengthen Czech government-owned LOM's case to lead a four-nation Hind upgrade package. Tvrdik says negotiations for the technical data are under way. A deal would be worth CKr65 million ($1.8million).

The air force may also receive spares for its aircraft and air defence systems.
