Daimler Benz Aerospace's Dornier division and the Georgian Institute for Space Constructions are to investigate the possible use of large unfurlable antennas for communications satellites.

The organisations will conduct a joint study of antennas 12m to 19m in diameter designed to provide the high transmitting power for future communications satellite systems.

DASA said that only US companies have built antennas as large as this for some military and communications satellites.

Engineers in the CIS state of Georgia have, however, been building prototypes of large antennas which were to have been used for the Soviet counterpart of the US Star Wars programme.
