As you walk around the halls and displays this year you are bound to be impressed by the eye-catching ingenuity of the many models and layouts that are in such number around the show.

But few will consider the hard work and imagination that goes into the design of the displays themselves. Mark Elgar is the managing director of the 4sight design group. His team designed and built the stand for Parker Aerospace (Hall 4, stand D4).

A dazzling display of coloured neon-tubing, impressive models and plasma-screen animations are all used to catch the attention of passers by and it is not surprising to learn that a production like that takes some time to realise.

One-offs

"We started design on the stand about a year ago and began building around nine month ago," says Elgar. "The models demonstrate where the systems are on the planes - in this case it's the hydraulics, flight controls and the fuel system.

The plane isn't meant to be any particular type - it's just there to illustrate the systems, and highlights the link between those various systems and their end use."

Elgar says the aircraft models are unique to each display: "The models are total one-offs, and the animations take a long time to do - we'll find out in time whether or not they work."
