Eurocopter has unveiled a "super quiet" version of the AS350B3 Ecureuil (Squirrel) light single helicopter, dubbed the EC130. The Fenestron-equipped turbine single, it says, will "meet the very latest noise regulations and be able to operate in the most noise-sensitive areas".

The key to the new development is a change from a traditional open tail rotor to a Fenestron, using a symmetrical version of the system developed for the EC135 twin. Other improvements, such as rotor speed control, have been added to maintain the lowest rotor speed while retaining performance.

Eurocopter's aim with the EC130 is to provide a highly reliable single-engined helicopter. "It brings new life to singles," says EC130 programme manager Xavier de la Servette. Eurocopter has added a dual-channel full-authority digital engine control with a third (digital) backup channel and dual hydraulics. The improvements also "eliminate the need for pilot training for emergency procedures in hydraulic and/or regulation failures".

The cabin is around 25cm (0.82ft) wider than that of the Ecureuil and slightly flatter, while cargo space is increased by 10%. Eurocopter says the EC130 is aimed at emergency medical and military markets. Price is likely to be around $1.6 million in visual flight rules configuration. US, European and French certification was clinched last December.
