The Spectrum Astro-built Deep Space 1 (DS-1), the first of NASA's New Millennium programme spacecraft, flew to within 15km of the asteroid 9969 Braille on 29 July, returning images and science data.

The DS-1's visible-light camera was incorrectly positioned during the flyby and could not detect the asteroid. The infrared imager returned images of Braille, however, showing it to resemble the larger Vesta asteroid, which has a surface of basaltic rock. Scientists believe Braille may have broken away from Vesta.
