Romanian F-16s?
Romania is discussing with Belgium the possible purchase of Lockheed Martin F-16 fighters to upgrade its ageing air force, says Romanian defence minister Teodor Atanasiu. Romania joined NATO in 2004 and hopes to join the European Union next year. It has 106 combat-capable Mikoyan MiG-21s (upgraded to the “Lancer” standard), including 13 two-seat trainers, which are expected to be phased out between 2010 and 2012. Romania last year looked at buying upgraded former Israeli F-16A/Bs in a deal worth $150 million.
