The US Department of State has given its approval to a potentially $2.6 billion sale to Egypt of 23 Boeing CH-47F Chinook transport helicopters.
Outlined on 26 May, the prospective Foreign Military Sales deal “will improve Egypt’s heavy-lift capability…. strengthen its homeland defence and deter regional threats”, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency says.
The proposed package for Cairo also includes extended range fuel systems, aircraft self-protection equipment and 10 spare Honeywell T55-714A engines.
Cirium fleets data shows that the Egyptian air force currently operates 19 D-model Chinooks, aged between 22 and 41 years.
