Delta Air Lines aims to open its latest expansion at New York JFK International airport in the first quarter of 2015, as it moves to consolidate the majority of its operations in terminal 4.
The 11-gate regional expansion to concourse B was scheduled to open by mid-2015 but is on-track to open during the first three months, says Gail Grimmett, the Atlanta-based carrier’s executive in charge of New York, on the sidelines of the monthly Wings Club luncheon in New York today.
The addition will allow Delta to consolidate the vast majority of its operations into terminal 4, following the opening a nine-gate expansion to the terminal in May 2013.
A small number of domestic flights will still depart from terminal 2 at JFK after the latest expansion opens.
Delta is working on future plans that would allow it to consolidate all of its flights at New York’s primary international airport into one facility.
“We continue to evaluate what our next needs are,” says Grimmett. There is no update from similar comments she made on the possible third phase in November 2013, she says.
In addition to the expansion at JFK, Delta is working on an expansion to one of the security checkpoints in terminal C and cleaning up some of its facilities at New York LaGuardia airport.
Grimmett describes the work there as a “fluff and buff” job primarily.
Delta took over the majority of terminal C from US Airways after the two closed their slot swap deal in December 2011. It opened a secure connecting corridor between terminal C and D, where the majority of its operations are at LaGuardia, in December 2012.
The terminal improvements and expansions are part of a $2 billion investment the airline has made in the New York area.
