Delta in new low-cost plan

Delta Air Lines has turned to a seasoned industry veteran to lead its new low-cost strategy. John Selvaggio, 55, is to head "development of a product that meets customer demand for low-price service, and [competes] more aggressively with low-cost carriers".

Selvaggio, previously Delta's senior vice-president airport customer service, has a long track record - he started his 30-year career in airlines with American Airlines, ending it with a spell as president of regional subsidiary Wings West.

From 1994-97 he was the president of low-cost start-up Midway Airlines. He joined Delta from the US Airways Express operation where he had planned the introduction of regional jets.

"The strategy is more than a low-cost carrier response," says Selvaggio. "We want to build on the successes of Delta Express, which will continue to be a very effective competitor in every market it serves."

However, Delta Express was one of the operations the carrier cut back after September, axing around 50% of flights. It will operate 38.5% fewer flights this summer compared with last.
